Ripper Street: Cast and Crew Photo

The following was tweeted today by Ed Bruce.  I'm definitely ready for 7 more crackers!

Ripper Street S2: The Guide Recommends

Here's what The Guide says about Ripper Street:

The brilliant Victorian crime procedural returns. Matthew Macfadyen stars as Inspector Reid, the copper with the misfortune to have Victorian Whitechapel as his patch. The scripts soar above anything else in its genre and really throw the visually similar Peaky Blinders into sharp relief. This is how sharp, observant and subtle period drama can be.

Ripper Street: Ready in time for a Spooky Halloween

Ripper Street returns to UK screens tomorrow, just in time for Halloween spookyness.  Sara Wallis of the Mirror visited the set of Ripper Street in Dublin.  Here's a few things Matthew Macfadyen told Sara:

Detective Inspector Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) fears a new hell is to be unleashed.

“I like Reid,” says Matthew, 39. “He’s very forward-thinking and interested in people, although he’s much more lonely in this series.

“But he does meet a woman this time. She’s a very smart, fiery county councillor and they instantly hit it off. But it’s early days as he’s still married, with his wife in an asylum.

“The show just gets better and better as the writers are having fun and taking risks. It’s a thriller with great storylines.”

Read the entire article on the Mirror and be sure to watch Ripper Street on Monday at 9 pm on BBC One.

Ripper Street S2: The Express says the new series is darker than ever

The Express discusses Ripper Street and here are some excerpts

As the death knell sounds for the 19th Century and the British Empire declines with alarming speed, anarchy reigns in Whitechapel. Evil seems to be triumphing over good in this lawless part of London.

The detectives have to battle challenges as diverse as a new drug threat from the Far East, a female gang who are twice as vicious as their male counterparts, a venal energy tycoon and a manipulative guru. At the same time, "Long" Susan (MyAnna Buring, Downton Abbey), the local madam, has a fight on her hands to save her business from a crime lord.

And Matthew said the following:

"They are a lovely trio," Matthew, 39, adds. "Reid represents the serious modern man, Jackson represents the future, and Drake represents the past. It works because it's such a good balance of characters. I like Reid. He is very forward–thinking and always on the front foot. He is still very interested in people and not in the least bit jaded. He is not your typical seen–it–all cop."

Be sure to read a lot more about Ripper Street on The Express.  Ripper Street series 2 debuts on BBC One at 9 pm this Monday 28 October.

Ambassadors: Herald Scotland Review

The Scottish Sunday Herald has a mixed review of the first episode of Ambassadors, but has the following comment about Matthew's POD:

Particularly amusing was Matthew Macfadyen, a wonderful, changeable, attractive actor who is now inheriting all the roles that Hugh Grant used to be good at. In Ambassadors, he played a slick, slicked-down, supremely confident Tory minister who wants to secure a £2 billion helicopter deal with the Tazbeks pretty much at all costs.
