Ripper Street S2: The Express says the new series is darker than ever

The Express discusses Ripper Street and here are some excerpts

As the death knell sounds for the 19th Century and the British Empire declines with alarming speed, anarchy reigns in Whitechapel. Evil seems to be triumphing over good in this lawless part of London.

The detectives have to battle challenges as diverse as a new drug threat from the Far East, a female gang who are twice as vicious as their male counterparts, a venal energy tycoon and a manipulative guru. At the same time, "Long" Susan (MyAnna Buring, Downton Abbey), the local madam, has a fight on her hands to save her business from a crime lord.

And Matthew said the following:

"They are a lovely trio," Matthew, 39, adds. "Reid represents the serious modern man, Jackson represents the future, and Drake represents the past. It works because it's such a good balance of characters. I like Reid. He is very forward–thinking and always on the front foot. He is still very interested in people and not in the least bit jaded. He is not your typical seen–it–all cop."
