Ripper Street News updates

Filming for the 8 part series, Ripper Street, will take place in Dublin, Ireland. The filming will last 19 weeks and invest €8m in the Irish economy, with over 250 Irish cast and crew employed. 

According to The Irish Times, The streets of Clancy Quays in Islandbridge, near Heuston Station, will fill in for the streets of Whitechapel in the East End of London for the series.  Filming begins mid-march.

The series is expected to star actor Matthew Macfadyen in the main role as a detective leading the ultimately unsuccessful hunt for the Ripper, who murders at least five women in Whitechapel in 1888.

According to Variety, Ripper Street may appear on US tv: 

Tiger Aspect and Lookout are already partnered on a procedural drama series, "Ripper Street," set in the late 1880s during the period of the Jack the Ripper murders. "Ripper Street" is set to bow on the BBC in the fall, and Vaughan has been fielding interest from U.S. nets

Anna Karenina is Experimental

Director Joe Wright told Empire Magazine (via Playlist) that three weeks before filming began for Anna Karenina, he scrapped routine plans to film in the UK and Russia. Instead, he desired something more experimental. He decided to film the majority of the Russian epic in a run down theatre stage built from scratch at Shepperton Studios.

Thus the tale of a love triangle within the Russian aristocracy and its themes of trying to find an authentic life will play out in a theatre with movie magic creating a "fluid linearity" says Wright. The stage will be an ice rink at one point, a train station the next - characters will "walk from one house under the 'stage' straight onto the horse training ground" and doors will lead to Russian landscapes.

Cutaway wide shots to show exteriors and scale will employ toy trains and dollhouses, while anachronistic flourishes (ie. props and elements from more modern and/or ancient times) will intrude as Anna's sanity unravels. Only Domhnall Gleeson's character Levin will venture outside the theatre as he is the only truly authentic character amongst a group of posers and is thus "able to go out in the real world".

Ripper Street - new lead role

Ian Wylie just tweeted news from the BBC, that Matthew Macfadyen has been cast in lead role of Ripper Street. According to a recent BBC press release for the programme, it starts shooting in the Spring.

Created by writer Richard Warlow (Mistresses, Waking The Dead), Ripper Street is an extraordinary new drama set in the East End of London in 1889, during the aftermath of the "Ripper" murders. The action centres around the notorious H Division – the police precinct from hell – which is charged with keeping order in the chaotic streets of Whitechapel. Ripper Street explores the lives of characters trying to recover from the Ripper's legacy, from crimes that have not only irretrievably altered their lives, but the very fabric of their city. At the drama's heart our detectives try to bring a little light into the dark world they inhabit.
