Filming for the 8 part series, Ripper Street, will take place in Dublin, Ireland. The filming will last 19 weeks and invest €8m in the Irish economy, with over 250 Irish cast and crew employed. 

According to The Irish Times, The streets of Clancy Quays in Islandbridge, near Heuston Station, will fill in for the streets of Whitechapel in the East End of London for the series.  Filming begins mid-march.

The series is expected to star actor Matthew Macfadyen in the main role as a detective leading the ultimately unsuccessful hunt for the Ripper, who murders at least five women in Whitechapel in 1888.

According to Variety, Ripper Street may appear on US tv: 

Tiger Aspect and Lookout are already partnered on a procedural drama series, "Ripper Street," set in the late 1880s during the period of the Jack the Ripper murders. "Ripper Street" is set to bow on the BBC in the fall, and Vaughan has been fielding interest from U.S. nets

Ripper Street is an extraordinary new drama set in the East End of London in 1889, during the aftermath of the "Ripper" murders. The action centres around the notorious H Division – the police precinct from hell – which is charged with keeping order in the chaotic streets of Whitechapel.

Ripper Street explores the lives of characters trying to recover from the Ripper's legacy, from crimes that have not only irretrievably altered their lives, but the very fabric of their city. At the drama's heart our detectives try to bring a little light into the dark world they inhabit.

Status: Shooting began on location in Dublin on March 12, 2012.  Filming is expected to continue until late July.  Ripper Street is expected to air on BBC1 and BBC America during the fall of 2012

Ripper Street - new lead role

Ian Wylie just tweeted news from the BBC, that Matthew Macfadyen has been cast in lead role of Ripper Street. According to a recent BBC press release for the programme, it starts shooting in the Spring.
