Sky Television, The South Bank Show presents a unique fly-on-the-wall film following a day’s rehearsal for the National Theatre’s production of Henry IV, starring Michael Gambon as Falstaff under the direction of Nicholas Hytner.
It was the first time Gambon, described by Arthur Miller as “Britain’s greatest living actor”, had agreed to be filmed as he prepares for a new role. This film observes him getting to grips with one of Shakespeare’s most popular characters, the multi-faceted Falstaff, and his changing relationship with Prince Hal, played by Spooks star, Matthew Macfadyen, who also played the role of Mr Darcy in the big budget movie version of Pride and Prejudice.
