Press Journal Interview- Three Men and One Epic Life (Nov 2010)

The Press and Journal has a lovely interview with all three Logans from Any Human Heart. Thanks to Luce for finding it!

Here's a bit from Matthew's portion:

Macfadyen, who also stars in Pillars Of The Earth, plays Logan through middle age, from the thrill and heartache of true love and the birth of his first child, to the horrors of the Second World War and, later, the scandal of the New York art scene in the Fifties and Sixties.

“I’d always been a big fan of William Boyd’s books and read this and couldn’t put it down,” recalls Macfadyen, 36.

He describes Logan as a “wonderful” character who has “great highs and lows in his life”, but he admits he’s not a man without flaws.

“He’s selfish, petty and vain, but he deals with everything like all of us, so he’s very rounded and human.

“Reading him, I was very comforted by the story of his life. You think, ‘I’m not alone’. Everyone is struggling to find happiness and meaning in their life.”

This is the man who’s married to Ashes To Ashes star Keeley Hawes, with whom he has two children, and who’s forging a successful Hollywood career with roles in Frost/Nixon, Pride And Prejudice and the recent Ridley Scott epic, Robin Hood. He is currently shooting a new big-screen adaptation of The Three Musketeers.

But his experience on Any Human Heart has proven one of his most enjoyable yet. “It was so wonderful having such a brilliant cast, it was such a treat,” he says.

“You’d be on set every day and there’d be these brilliant actors coming in for a day or two, flying in and being brilliant and then going away and you’re thinking, ‘Wow’.”
