"Ripper Street has to be violent to be real"

Richard Warlow, creator of Ripper Street, has said that he wanted to be “truthful to what it was like to live in Whitechapel in that period”.  In fact, there was a lot more violence that can't be shown during that time.

He added: “I’m glad it’s been a shock to the system. Sunday night drama has needed that for a while. I was also keen for it to feel like an East End western, which is why we also have an American character.”
